Sharm El Sheikh Visa 2026: Free Sinai Stamp vs. Full Egypt Visa Compared

Sharm El Sheikh Visa 2026: Free Sinai Stamp vs. Full Egypt Visa Compared
Two completely different entry options cover a trip to Sharm El Sheikh, and mixing them up is the single most common visa mistake travelers make here. Here's the free Sinai-only stamp against the full Egypt visa, side by side, so you know exactly which one your actual itinerary needs.

Option 1: the free Sinai-only stamp

Cost: $0. Coverage: South Sinai only — Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, Taba — for up to 14 days. Most nationalities get this automatically at passport control, no advance application. As of early 2026, Sharm El Sheikh and Taba airports moved away from the old paper arrival card, so exactly what the immigration officer asks for can vary by airport — follow their instructions rather than hunting for a form that may no longer exist.

Option 2: the full Egypt e-Visa or visa on arrival

Cost: $30 for single entry either way (prices rose from $25 on 1 March and 27 April 2026 respectively), or $65 for a 6-month multiple-entry e-Visa. Coverage: all of Egypt, including Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and the rest of mainland Egypt. The e-Visa is applied for online in advance at visa2egypt.gov.eg; the visa on arrival is bought in cash at the airport bank counter.

The comparison that actually matters: what does your trip include?

If every day of your trip stays inside Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba, or Taba: the free stamp covers you completely, no need to pay for anything. The moment your trip includes a day trip to Cairo, a flight to Luxor, or — the one people miss most often — a Ras Mohammed National Park excursion, you need the full visa instead, not the free stamp. Ras Mohammed sits just outside the free zone despite being a short boat ride from the Sharm marina, which is exactly why this trips up so many travelers.

New in 2026: the digital QR system changes the full-visa side only

Since 1 August 2026, Egypt has been piloting a digital QR-code version of the visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport — a $36 total fee ($30 visa plus a $6 issuing fee), applied for up to 48 hours before arrival via kiosk, portal, app, or travel agency. This only affects travelers using the full-visa route through Cairo; it has no bearing on the free Sinai-only stamp, and hasn't been confirmed for Sharm El Sheikh Airport yet.

Price trap to avoid

Several unofficial websites copy the look of Egypt's real e-Visa portal and overcharge for the identical visa. The only official e-Visa site is visa2egypt.gov.eg — the free Sinai stamp, by definition, is never something you pay a website for at all.

Quick answers

Staying only in Sharm for a week — do I need to pay anything? No, the free stamp covers it. Adding one Cairo day trip to an otherwise Sinai-only week — same answer? No — that one day trip means you need the full visa for the whole stay, not just that day. Is Ras Mohammed really outside the free zone? Yes, despite how close it looks on a map.
If your trip stays in the free zone, a Dahab Blue Hole day trip is the easy comparison winner — same cost either way, since it needs no visa at all. If you're paying for the full visa regardless, pairing it with the Cairo pyramids day trip or the Luxor flight day trip makes the visa fee a small add-on to a trip you'd likely book anyway.
